Universally Acknowledged Truths The world of literature is an extensive one that dates back to many years ago. With prominent writers such as Chaucer, Caxton and Shakespeare among many, literature became one of the most important arts in the world and a well-read person was recognized as educated and intelligent. When one acknowledges this fact, it is necessary to question why the introductory sentence in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is one of the most recognized sentences in literature today. Oftentimes, one need only to start the sentence, â€Å"It is a truth universally acknowledged,† before someone else will finish it and a discussion of Austen’s brilliant tale will commence. This line then, is very worthy of being analyzed and an attempt to fully understand it must be made. The complexity of this line goes beyond just the meaning of it, but one must also consider who might believe and agree with this statement, one must also question the objectivity of the speaker and if it is indeed, a universally acknowledged truth. As one reads the novel, it is not hard to conclude that this line may very well be attributed to a character like Mrs. Bennet, and if not directly to her, to the type of character that she represents. Developed the Send All Entries button to send the username amended with all notes from all players along with the date and time when the note was made along with a popup dialog that allows the user to cancel out of sending the email if they intend to do so. 4. It shows that mans behaviour does not vary over long periods of time and across different cultures. It shows that each and every single person has an evil or dark side to them and it is whether they succumb to this evil or follow the paths of light and goodness that decide what kind of person they are. Cheshunt, where the story is set appears to be a fairly normal town. When Nathanial and his mother arrive, Nathanial instinctively knows that something is not quite right. Nathanial is there for a reason. He and the other members of The Chain must learn the power of friendship to defeat the evil Kraken. The dark side of human nature is seen in many characters: Cheshunts headmaster Mr Karle is a truly evil person. Although Mr Karles only role in the community is Deputy Principal of Three North, he has manipulated those who do have a major role in the community into making himself the main power over all Cheshunt. His goal is to become the ruler of the world, starting with Cheshunt. To make sure that The Chain does not defeat him, Mr Karle defeats one member at a time. Mr Karle portrays the dark side of human nature he has attained power that he then uses to control all those around him. He has become corrupted by this power and with it he is able to manipulate the other characters to perform vicious acts. Mr Karle taunts and mocks in an attempt to emotionally destroy those around him he takes pleasure in others emotional pain. He causes distress in Nathanial when he tells him of his cold hearted father who was Insanely jealous. Unstable. Violent (page 263) and how Nathanials mother learnt not to speak to anyone or smile in fear of what his father would do to her. When Mr Karle reminds Indian that his sister is brain damaged because of Indians own mistakes he does this knowing the heartache this will cause. He mocks Nissa calling her unfeminine and unattractive and how no one could love such a creature except out of pity (page 246). Mr Karle defeats one character at a time. He is physically cruel and used force to hurt them. Mr Karle embodies all that is the dark side of human nature, he is cruel both emotionally and physically Then the Kraken stepped forward and slapped her across the face. A trickle of dark blood ran from the corner of her mouth (page 249). He is corrupted by power, he is manipulative and in all this he takes pleasure. He is a true sadist. The dark side in human nature is also portrayed in many of the other characters, this is evidenced in Buddha Isobelle Carmody has used the name Buddha that represents peace and harmony and made him a killer. He burns Nathanials dog, The Tod, who is Nathanials only true friend and Nathanial loves. The match landed in his tail and flames swept forward up over him. Devoured him. He arched and coiled, yelping in pain and fright, and then he screamed, a long inhuman howl of agony and terror. (page 214). When Buddha burns The Tod it is a vicious, cowardly act and is evidence of how dark mans nature can be, that he can murder a poor, defenseless creature that is incapable of fighting back, also that the act was carried out in front of Nathanial to cause him immense grief and feelings of powerlessness. What is even more disturbing is that this is such a real act that could happen in our everyday life. How the people who are in a position to protect us and how they use this authority in a destructive way is also shown. The police, who are supposed to be good and honest are corrupt and evil. They protect the evil leaders and enforce their law, The pamphlet stuck under the door the day we arrived had welcomed us to the neighbourhood and urged my mother to join the Community Committee. I didnt get Seth. He came to us. (page 250). Nathanials father is a character who shows that mans dark side does not vary over long periods of time. Nathanials father was a violent jealous man who liked to have complete control over everything. He was jealous of Nathanial and the attention he got from his mother, especially when Nathanial was a baby I had to sometimes hold your mouth to stop the crying (page 264). Mans darkest nature was shown when his father attempted to kill Nathanial, Children should be seen and not heard, he said, and his big hands closed around my neck. And squeezed. (page 247). This is absolute evidence of innate evil that a father could try to murder his own son. In conclusion, The Gathering shows us the dark side of human nature and it is vividly portrayed. It has a realness that shows that evil is present in the past and in the future and is occurring right now, in all parts of our life. It shows that power can corrupt you and consume you absolutely. It also shows us that cruelty, deceit, jealousy and manipulation are just some of the many ways evil can be shown.

Educational Goals and Philosophy As an Elementary Education major I have learned that an educator’s job is not just to teach the student/s about basic curriculum such as reading, writing, geography, history and mathematics. However, is to also instill basic views of society into the student to create an over-all, well- rounded adult and because of this course I have developed some definite views and opinions about education and the many expectations of a teacher. During this course I have been exposed to many different views, opinions and theories concerning education and the role of the teacher, and I especially relate to the philosophical views of Rousseau. In fact, I agree with just about every aspect of Rousseau’s theory. I believe that the child is born innocent and if it is exposed to a certain environment will remain innocent. But, not all children are able to remain innocent, they may have issues at home or even personal issues that can or will corrupt him/her. This corruption may influence the child’s learning process once he/she enters into school. I also feel that students truly do have the desire to learn and know the truth and that over-all humans are good- natured. The environment that the child is exposed to however has a very high influence upon the child and how the child handles the pressures and demands of education and learning. Knowledge, in my belief, is relative. Therefore I think, this places a lot of responsibility upon the teacher. The teacher should be in control of the classroom at all times and if the teacher allows actions to go on that may be distracting to some students then those students, due to the distractions, may not do as well in this chaotic classroom environment. However, if the same students were placed in a classroom environment that was not quite as distracting and much more orderly then the same students would probably succeed at the same material that they had struggled with in the chaotic environment. Once again the learning environment is very crucial to the success of the student and depending upon each student and how the classroom in conducted this may be the deciding factor in a student’s success. Once I become a teacher I hope to conduct my classroom in manner in which my students feel comfortable and excited to learn. I hope that the material that they learn from me will be carried with them for the years ahead and this knowledge will become the solid building blocks that is used daily by a successful adult.

D. A’s approval. Since its creation, arguments both pro and anti birth control have been immense. From religious beliefs to freedom of choice, both sides still have yet to find a middle ground on this matter. Whether negative or positive, birth control has had a tremendous impact on American society with no compromise in sight.The pro birth control side believes we must know in the war of birth control what exactly we are fighting for, teens are going to have to sex before marriage regardless, and parents have to do what they can to minimize the effects of it. According to one thinker, â€Å"The first step in determining the dispense of birth control is acknowledging the frequency of non-marital sex, and willingness to consider its consequences. † Backed by Susan Jacoby studies, indicating that the percent of the population having sex by the age of 21 rose from 40% to 70% were for the entire population.Today, 77% of men and women will have had sex, including 75% who will have had premarital sex, by the age of 20. Consequently, 95% of the entire population will have had sex outside of marriage by the age of 44, and they will overwhelmingly have done so with someone other than a person they will eventually marry (Jacoby). Naomi Cahn, a professor from George Washington University Law School once stated, â€Å" The war for non-premarital sex was lost long ago, we’re now combatting the results of the loss with our main weapon being birth control. Once conceding defeat, the belief is that parents can neutralize the consequences of teens having sex by giving them birth control. On the other hand the anti birth control side; tends to believe by parents giving birth control to teens, they ar e in fact promoting teen promiscuity. According to research done by Richard John Neuhaus commenting on giving birth control to kids, â€Å"To do so would be to try something that possibly no society has tried before: to state publicly that there are no social standards or sanctions with respect to the sexual activity of young people.Giving teens birth control would be parents way of saying, I expect you to have sexual intercourse with out verbally saying it. This would make it appear to be normal, thus by virtue lending a helping hand in teens having sexual intercourse (Neuhaus). Activist states not only are we putting our future in jeopardy by denying them birth control, but we are also damaging our young teens.Teens whom had to bear unwanted children have shown consistent patterns of anti-social behavior and neglect by their own parents. Stoichiometry February 28th, 2013 Abstract: The reactions of the Sodium Hydroxide and two acids, Hydrochloric Acid and Sulfuric Acid were performed. The heat given off by these two reactions was used to determine the stoichiometric ratio and the limiting reactants in each experiment. Introduction: Coefficients in a balanced equations show how many moles of each reactant is needed to react with each other and how many moles of each product that will be formed. Stoichiometry allows us to calculate the amount of reactants needed and also the amount of product.The major basis of stoichiometry is formed by the law of definite proportions, which states that a chemical compound always contains the exact proportion of elements by mass. This is also the heart of balancing chemical equations. The coefficients of a balanced equation can also be thought of as the ratios in which the reactants combine. In the chemical equation A+ B> AB the coefficients tell us that for every one mole of reactant â€Å"A† one moles of reactant â€Å"B† are needed and used to produce the product â€Å"AB†.If two moles of â€Å"A† was present and only one mole of â€Å"B† the excess mole of â€Å"A† would have nothing to react with. In this reaction â€Å"B† would be the limiting reactant. The reaction is limited due to â€Å"B† because once â€Å"B† is all used up, the reaction will stop, and there would be an excess of unused â€Å"A†. The progress of a reaction can be measured by the heat energy that is given off. Exothermic reactions give off heat and therefore an increase in temperature also occurs. The reaction between an acid and a base is also known as neutralization, and is usually an exothermic reaction.When reactants are combined at stoichiometric ratios the reaction is able to be completed and would exert the most heat energy. The purpose of this lab was to carry out the reaction between a basic solution of Sodiu m Hydroxide with Hydrochloric acid, and also the reaction of Sodium Hydroxide with Sulfuric Acid to determine the limiting reactant and the stoichiometric ratio of each experiment. Procedure: Reaction Between HCL and NaOH Diluted Solutions of HCL and NaOH were prepared. 120 ml of 3M stock of HCl and NaOH were measured with a graduated cylinder and placed into two 250 ml beakers.Two 400ml beakers were filled with 240 ml of water measured by graduated cylinder. The 120ml of HCl was added to one of the beakers containing water and the 120 NaOH to the other, both being added slowly while stirring the solution vigourously. Label the beakers HCl and NaOH. Keep the beakers covered with a watch glass when not in use. Measure and record the temperature of the NaOH solution using the PASCO Explorer temperature probe. Make sure to rinse off and dry the probe after every use. Obtain a coffee cup calorimeter and lid to house the reactions.Measure the appropriate amount HCl (see chart A) pour it in the calorimeter and determine its temperature using the temperature probe. Record the temperature. Measure the corresponding amount of NaOH (see chart A) and add it to the calorimeter all at once. Put the lid back on the calorimeter and stir it carefully with the probe. Record the highest temperature reached as the reaction occurs. Rinse the cup with deionized water and dry.
